Why it’s #10: “New York” features some of the duo’s grittiest and sludgiest sounds from one of their most cohesive records yet. Just when you think this can’t get grungier. They dig their heels in and find depths of emotion to create some of the most incredible music, including this song.
9. Bastille (feat. Hans Zimmer)
“Pompeii MMXXIII”
Why it’s #9: For this visionary rework of Bastille’s mega-hit Pompeii. The band teams up with legendary film composer Hans Zimmer. The rework lays bare the inner workings of a truly brilliant and now timeless song and gives breadth to the often-overlooked songwriting talent of Frontman Dan Smith. Zimmer and crew aren’t just showing it in a new light. They craft a version of Pompeii for a new era. It’s lush, sweeping, and gorgeous.
8. Victoria Monet
“On My Mama”
Why it’s #8: A song that perfectly imbues the essence and vibes of 80s Dance, Funk, and R&B/Soul without sounding trite or pandering. Monet has captured the best pop/dance song and video this year. ‘On My Mama’, is note for note, a stylish and nuanced celebration of Blackness and the culture we bring to the table. If the driving bass line doesn’t get you, the insanely slick production, with some blaring horns for good measure, or the classical catchy hook. Then you might need your ears checked.
7. Chappell Roan
“Red Wine Supernova”
Why it’s #7: While it seemed like there weren’t a lot of artists this year making fun club pop hits (especially ones geared towards the LGBTQ+ community). Chappell Roan said let me try and more than try, she did. She succeeded. The song is lifted from her stellar debut album, The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess, and is an absolutely saucy and cheeky number. One that is sure to fill dance floors with its 80s spunky synths and funky bass lines.
6. Miley Cyrus
“Flowers”
Why it’s #6: It’s the (affirmational) bop of the year of the Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter. This was the song that Miley needed and deserved. That’s all.
5. The Last Dinner Party
“Nothing Matters”
Why it’s #5: Another band coming out of nowhere like a bat out of hell. Artfully blending Pop, Art-Rock, Indie, and an amalgamation of many other genres, the band has carved out a unique space and sound design. ‘Nothing Matters’ is a song that has become a beloved fave of mine this year with its honest lyricism and gothic charm. Since the band has only been together since 2021, they already have a pretty well-defined sound and stage presence that is so refreshing. I cannot wait to see what 2024 has in store for them.
4. Slow Pulp
“Slugs”
Why it’s #4: Another surprise artist for me this year, but the heavy guitars feel sludgy and distorted as they harken back to the early 90s Brit-Pop and Shoegaze. The song “Slugs’ is the magic combo lead vocalist Emily Massey's soft love-lorn vocals sync well against the band’s angsty soundscape.
3. Sampha
“Spirit 2.0”
Why it’s #3: You know the quote, “The music is not in the notes but in the silence between them”. Spirit 2.0 is a perfect example of that. What seems sparse in production and sound allows the beauty of this gorgeous track to shine through. It’s not like anything we’ve heard from Sampha before and definitely not like anything out now. That’s what makes it so brilliant.
2. RAYE
“Oscar Winning Tears.” (Live at the Royal Albert Hall)
Why it’s #2: First off, her voice, already stunning, just soars on this gorgeous live take at her special Royal Albert Hall concert. Raye hits every note on this song with so much depth and soul. Yet, Raye saves the best for the last ending on a spectacular vocal run that is the cherry on top.
1. Olivia Rodrigo
“get him back!”
Why it’s #1: For one, it’s the song that has been sounded off in my head since the first listen. The punchy lyrics are filled with grit and a punky effervescence that captures youth and heartbreak at its core, even if that means some revenge.

SMILEZ is a rising Los Angeles rapper, musician, and producer who just dropped his debut album ‘Ur in My World’. His sound is a genre-blending mix of rock-edged hip-hop beats that he self-produces, incorporating samples. Now that he is quickly carving out a fanbase with tracks like ‘Someday’. Which samples a part of the early Aughts band The Strokes song of the same name. Then ‘Coffee Queen’, a gen z take on finding your one and only. The artist known for his vibrant sunny yellow-hued persona (all puns intended), as much as his deadpan rap delivery, answered some questions for The Reclusive Blogger, which you can read below. SMILEZ talks about his influences, debut record, and how SMILEZ acquired his name.
THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: Thanks for taking some time out for a few questions. So, how has your 2023 been both professionally and personally, if you mind me asking?
SMILEZ: It’s been amazing, I’ve been really locked in on my craft this year. If I’m not in the studio I’m making music videos all the time. Right now I’m in Tokyo, so I’m on a high so I can’t complain about this year at all.
THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: Let's talk about how you got into the music scene, where the music persona SMILEZ came from, and how it all fits into where you are today?
SMILEZ: I’ve been making music for years since I was a little kid really. I’ve always loved punk rock and hip-hop. When I started going by SMILEZ it was just this lighthearted like fuck it why not go by some ridiculous name Its memorable which is what I liked. The name just fits the color aesthetic which Is kind of a color theme to my music videos etc. Yellow and bright colors musically I’m always on those 2 lines of punk rock and hip hop.
THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: What was the recording and writing process like for the album ‘Ur in My World’? Was it any different that any of your past experiences creating music?
SMILEZ: It was mainly different because I was making it with the whole project in mind. Most of my older music was just kind of random songs I had made. I made this whole album at home. Recording vocals and guitars myself and producing the whole thing. I love working with people but I wanted this to be very personal so I just was like fuck it ill do it myself. I wanted it to be a transparent look at my life.
THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: One of my favorite tracks off the record and the catchiest as well is “Someday”. I loved how you incorporated The Strokes sample. Can you talk more about how that came together? Is the blending of rock and hip-hop something that you did for this album or is that just innate in your music?
SMILEZ: Both, it kind of happens naturally but I love that idea of mixing rock and hip-hop in a new cool way. Blending both elements of the production and songwriting. The idea of what would the strokes or Nirvana sound like if they started today always interests me.
THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: What was it like opening up for such hip-hop and rap names like Wiz Khalifa and the passed-on JuiceWRLD?
SMILEZ: They were both insane experiences. I love performing so its just a pure rush for me. To be around Iconic artists like that was just inspiring.
THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: What was the last album you played that had no skips?
SMILEZ: Lil Uzi Vert Pink Tape would be the closest thing to no skips but I probably would skip the track with Travis Scott.
THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: What fictional character do you think would most identify with the SMILEZ sound and aesthetic?
SMILEZ: Pikachu, for the color theme, and Batman because that’s who I aspire to be
THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: Who are three artists from any type of artistic world, it doesn't have to be music, that influence you the most as a creative?
SMILEZ: Since we just mentioned Batman, Christopher Nolan as a director is inspiring for sure.

From the moment you hear the first few notes play from Dead Club City, the new album from English Rockers Nothing But Thieves. You know two things, this is not your standard Nothing But Thieves musical fare, and the band has boldly dipped their toes into the world of concept albums. So this is going to be a wild ride, and it is. If you haven't heard of Nothing But Thieves, they are a quintet hailing from Southend, U.K. comprising Conor Mason (vocals, guitar), Joe Langridge-Brown (guitars), Dominic Craik (guitars, keyboard), Philip Blake (bass), and James Price (drums). In their ten years, they have amassed quite the fanbase and following, including a #1 alternative radio single here in America with Trip Switch. Now the band is on the fourth studio album Dead Club City a blistering venture into an unknown world filled with narratives, characters, and concepts all inspired by the band's struggles with the pandemic, the lockdown, and life in this new world we live in. NBT has always had a natural knack for raw honesty and extrospection (and introspection in some cases) in their lyrics. So, an album like Dead City Club truly allows them to explore and hone in on those skills.
The album opener, Welcome To The DCC (aptly titled, I might add), quickly puts the listener within the world of the DCC. Frontman Conor Masons' honeyed falsetto greets you with the lyric Welcome To The DCC repeated. All set amongst an atmospheric soundscape of textured tones and synths. The crunchy layered guitars are all very 80s inspired and hard-hitting. The album segues into the second track, the anthemic single Overcome, a song filled with blissful synths, punchy basslines, and rockier guitars. Lyrically, it's one of few tracks that lean hopeful in tone and messaging. NBTs' grit is still very apparent throughout the record as well. It's not something they lost or even shied away from. It is all over tracks like Tomorrow Is Closed, City Haunts, and Members Only. The latter two have a sludgier stomp-rock vibe to them. There are a few restrained moments on the record, like the reflective love letter Green Eyes:: Siena and the slinky R&B-influenced confessional Talking To Myself. The band also leans fully into pop and electronic music on the dance-pop number Foreign Language. Dead Club City closes on a high note with the electric and hard-rock number Pop The Balloon. It is loud, brash, and so rock and roll.

While Nothing But Thieves has been a band for ten years now. This fourth record clearly shows why they are one of the U.K.s most exciting Rock acts and live shows. Dead Club City demonstrates Nothing But Thieves' progression as a band and their skill in experimentation. It has not steered them wrong so far. While the concept album can quickly go bad, even comical for so many artists, for Nothing But Thieves, it didn't. It could be the overall evasiveness and abstract nature of what is the inner realm of the Dead Club City. Which comes across in a more choose-your-own-adventure manner, even more so with the attached visuals. Then there is the tight production from band member Dominic Craik and the on-point vocals from Conor Mason. Whatever it is that gelled together at the right time, Nothing But Thieves has easily put out one of my favorite albums of this year.

Fresh off her Grammy win for “Unholy” with Sam Smith, pop artist Kim Petras drops “Alone”, another dance-pop banger just in time for Summer and those party playlists! This time Petras teams up with fellow Republic Records artist Nicki Minaj on this song teeming heavy 90’s euro dance-pop influences with modern dance-pop. Nicki’s R&B-inflected rap is the cherry on top for this steamy club banger about giving in to your impulses.
“Alone” follows a string of major releases for Kim in the last few years, including the Grammy-winning “Unholy”, “Coconuts”, and “Future Starts Now”.
Since her Republic Records signing, she has already garnered award wins, a Met Gala appearance, and her first late-night appearance and interview. You catch Kim Petras this on many festivals coming up ahead, including, Governor’s Ball and Life Is Beautiful. Kim Petras is a star on the rise.

ALBUM REVIEW: Andrew McMahon in The Wilderness - “TILT AT THE WIND NO MORE”
ALBUM REVIEW: ANDREW MCMAHON IN THE WILDERNESS - “TILT AT THE WIND NO MORE”
When Andrew McMahon first set out on a new journey within his musical career as a solo artist he had to overcome one of his biggest challenges ever… tackling Cancer. Now twenty years later when so many artists seemingly disappear, even without all the hardships, McMahon continues to rise and make some noise in the Alt Rock and Indie Pop scene under various monikers and projects. His latest as Andrew McMahon In The Wilderness is possibly his most well-known. Quite honestly the perfect creative alias for McMahon for what he has been through to come out the other side (or out of the wilderness, see what I did there?) happy, healthy, and with a family of his own, now looking back on it all with this new album, “Tilt at the Wind No More” out now on Nettwerk. The album is brimming with nostalgia, particularly Y2K nostalgia. A period of time that the album cover hints at. A pair of hands, of what I would assume is the hands of lovers, that can barely hold on amid vivid bright chaos. The cover is the perfect way to let the listener know what type of musical journey you will be taking, the kind of bold strokes of musical color that Andrew will choose to paint with.
“Tilt at the Wind No More” is the fourth album for Andrew under his Wilderness moniker and features production from Tommy English. "Lying On The Hood Of Your Car" opens up the record and is a song that quickly grabs your ear. It also has an underlying vibe of melancholy and nostalgia that sets the listener up for the rest of the album. We segue into two previously released singles, "Skywriting" & "Stars”. There are some exuberant synths and what sounds like some acoustic guitars set off in the back of the mix for good measure. These songs borrow from McMahon's earlier sounds, such as folk indie and country pop, with jangly guitars and a driving beat and bassline. "Submarine" leads us into more subdued territory as one of the few ballads on this release. "Built to Last" is the one that hones in the emotion, all without that feeling mawkish feeling like "Submarine". The use of a vocoder only adds to the hazy lo-fi fever dream. The other highlights of “Tilt at the Wind No More” include the bouncy pop confection "New Friends". We get an unapologetically fun, retro synth-wave drenched tune on "VHS". "Little Disaster" finds Andrew taking us down memory lane, grateful yet introspective. While the album for nonfans might feel a bit disjointed at times or too reminiscent of the mid-aughts radio-friendly indie pop, it is still a solid release. For fans of Andrew McMahon, they will no doubt be more pleased with this album and delighted with how many beautiful high notes this has.

Hey geeks and music freaks! It's time for year-end music roundups. The first one up is the best songs from the year. Me like so many, find comfort within music. These are my picks for the 10 Best albums of 2022…
I hope you had time to read and ponder the first list. If not, you can catch up and read my picks for the 100 best songs of 2022 here and here. Below are my top ten picks for best albums of the year. In a year that was full of incredibly diverse soundscapes from a plethora of artists. From breakout artists tipping the needle to your establishment acts pushing their artistry. It was initially hard to narrow down to only ten albums from the entire year. That’s why I made an extended version that featured my top 15 albums in an Instagram reel video which you can view by clicking here. But first, let’s dive into that top ten.
#10 Yard Act
“The Overload”
The Leeds-based act is one of three albums from my list that was on the shortlist for the Mercury Prize for this year. Their acerbic and in-your-face take on new Gen/Brexit era post-punk. Yard Act was a fresh sound and style full of depth, to say the least, with many of the tracks cultivating echoes of Talking Heads and even Joy Division.

#9 Mitski
“Laurel Hell”
An unflinching synth-pop meets electro-rock record about bad relationships and the unsettling realities of the music industry she was honestly suffering in. Her sweet lilting vocals are a sharp contrast to the biting visceral lyrics. Mitski is an artist stepping into her own, and on Laurel Hell, she created a full-bodied piece of art that was quite hard to put down.

#8 Everything,
Everything
“Raw Data Feel”
An album that is at once encapsulates the horrors, loneliness, uncertainty, and reliance we all have on social media and tech. It part-way features elements of A.I. through a bot named Kevin, whose a recurring character throughout the record and provides some lyrical content. Lead vocalist Jonathan Higgs finds his footing as a frontman as he deals with underlying trauma head-on. Ultimately the band creates some of their freshest work and spot-on production. Everything, Everything juxtaposes what should be at odds with each other putting the listener into a fun, hyperrealistic, and at times unsteady dance-pop world. One that adeptly mimics the current human existence of having to live a large majority of your life online.

#7 Lizzo
“Special”
The self-proclaimed 'America's Next Great Bop Star', herself, Lizzo, latest outing offers up her most emotionally connected work and one of the most feel-good releases of 2022. Lizzo dives into a well of deservedly pent-up feelings from an utterly life-changing few years. Her superb songwriting skills and knack for writing infectious pop hooks shine brightly throughout this record. That details stories of love, longing, heartbreak, loss, and regret, all through inescapable funk dance rhythms, silky pop-r&b melodies, and the disco-pop dance-floor readiness of lead single, About Damn Time.
Key Track: “To Be Loved”
#6 Wet Leg
“Wet Leg”
The Isle of Wight duo and their spunky and, at times, downright cocky debut were a fun and enlivened highlight of the year. A breath of fresh air to a genre and industry that can be stifling in many ways, it can be hard to keep up. Their witty comedic timing, the often on-point takedowns of nihilistic millennial/Gen Z behavior, and overall great musicality have proven this to be an instant hit and new gen classic.
Key Track: “Angelica”
#5 Placebo
“Never Let Me Go”
Brit Rock iconoclasts, Placebo made their 2022 return to music with the album Never Let Me Go. Not only a surprise but an absolute delight, particularly for the fans. Never Let Me Go, as an album, had Placebo in a robust form painting a layered sonic palette of dynamic synths, thrashing guitars, and driving bass lines. Molko's famous vocals are still there, along with his ever-present existential dread haunting every lyric. There are more hope-filled songs on the record such as the anthemic lead single, "Beautiful James". It is also worth noting that the pacing is perfect, with everything given room to flow.
Key Track: “Happy Birthday to the Sky”
#4 Beyoncé
“Renaissance”
Arguably the most well-rounded and sonically diverse record. It is one album on this list designed to be listened to from start to finish. The tracks seamlessly blend into each other. Beyonce has once more switched up her sound and taking a risk doing so. Structurally this is a Dance, Disco, and House album. Yet, interwoven throughout as well are the melodics and harmonics of pop and R&B music. Lyrically, the songs are fluid with black femininity and sexuality and the power of holding that space. It’s also worth noting how stunning her vocals are here.
Key Track: “Break My Soul”
#3 Bastille
“Give Me The Future”
What wound up being a record I could hardly turn off and put down for many reasons. One of the biggest reasons of note was how Bastille perfectly captures a sense of longing, nostalgia, loss, and those post-lockdown fears and paranoia many of us from the millennial and Generation Z set. That and our addiction and ambivalence to social media and tech are truly driven home lyrically in this infectious dance-pop meets electro-rock escapade. So, seeing as Bastille has always had a knack for synthesizing introspective and bleak lyrical themes in culture and then setting them to upbeat danceable music. The band’s journey to get to this point and this album where they honed in on those skills was oh-so-satisfying.

#2 Nova Twins
“Supernova”
This exceptional duo create a sound that is hard to pin down, yet you know you want more. The Nova Twins easily win as the artists that have excited me the most this year, bringing an all-encompassing force and freshness to Rock that I have not heard or seen in some time. Their ferocity, femininity, strength, talent, loudness, and sexuality are heard loud and unmistakable here as Black women on this powerful and raw record. Not only do Amy Love and Georgia South take musical cues from Alternative Rock, R&B, Rock, Metal, Pop, Hip-Hop, Rap, Punk, and pretty much everything. They infuse their style, unique way of playing (heavy usage of pedals, including pitch shift pedals), and an overall hip vibe to create something I haven’t heard before and don’t think sounds like anything else out now. I’m excited to see how they push forward from here.

‘“The Car”
I understand this band is not everyone's cup of tea, but what they do, they do brilliantly. Frontman Alex Turner's vocals have developed into a strong troubadour sound here. That set against the lushly layered soundscapes (I caught the addition of orchestral arrangements here, what?!!) from a band that is tighter than ever, and Matt Helders on the pocket succinct drumming. The Car is their most cohesive album to date. It's a melting pot of cinema scores, music from the 60s and 70s, those signature Arctic Monkeys inflections, and Beatlesesque harmonies. Arctic Monkeys as a band has never been known for subtlety in sound or proper pacing, but with The Car, they've achieved both. Ultimately, making it such a worthwhile listen.

THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: Hey, Addison! How are you doing, how’s your 2022 been so far?
ADDISON GRACE: It’s been pretty busy! I released my first EP, ”Immaturing”, this year after touring with Cavetown and Tessa Violet. After that, I was traveling during the summer to write and record my second EP, ”Things That Are Bad for Me” that’s coming out November 11th. I also went on my first headline tour which was so exciting!
THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: Can you talk about your origin story a bit and how that relates to your career as a musician today?
ADDISON GRACE: I was raised by a single mom who would put me and my siblings in any and every sport and/or performing art. It was her way of keeping us busy and letting us find what interested us while she would be working. The only thing that ever stuck for me was singing. Growing up I joined nearly every school and church choir. When I was 13, my brother bought a ukulele while in France. I ended up “stealing” it from him because I had seen recent videos of YouTubers making their own songs on the ukulele. From then on I had started to do the same, making original music with the ukulele, and started my own little online pages too. I think because I had a mom that was so passionate about me finding what I loved is why I am and able to be a singer-songwriter today.
THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: Let’s talk about your new single ‘Pretty Girl’. What was the recording and writing process like? The inspiration for this new single?
ADDISON GRACE: “Pretty Girl” was written in Nashville with one of my favorite co-writers, Charli Adams, who’s also an incredible artist. I told her about my gender transition and how I had dated someone before as a girl. This person, in my mind, was my soulmate. I was frustrated because there was a chance for us to get back together but I had made the self discovery that I’m transgender and I knew they weren’t, and aren’t, attracted to boys. I also told her about how I hated still being loved “as a girl” and seen ”as a girl“ by a lot of people in society and on the internet. I knew I wanted the song to be called “Pretty Girl” but finding the artistic words for those specific feelings had been stumping me. Charli absolutely helped me pull them out and make it into the song it is today. Recording with Andy Seltzer was incredible as well. He absolutely got the sound/production perfect for what I wanted and needed in this song.
THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: Do you have a typical songwriting process or do you just go with the flow and create with inspiration hits?
ADDISON GRACE: Honestly, my songwriting always changes and I’ve never had a specific flow. Usually I just write when I’m feeling an intense emotion. If I end up getting inspiration when I’m somewhere that I can’t write, I just make a note of it for later. Songwriting is genuinely my diary.
THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: What lyric have you written that you feel best represents the world around us right now?
ADDISON GRACE: “Take it off, oxygen, cut your hair, grow it out again. The world will end a couple times.” I think it really represents the stress we all feel with everything going on but it also brings comfort with it. I really love the idea that we can be broken, beaten, and bruised but still find a way back up. Hope and determination are both very powerful.
THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: How do you feel TikTok will play a part in finding artists and new music in the coming years of the music industry?
ADDISON GRACE: I think we’re gonna get a wave of a lot of new indie artists and experimental ones too. I genuinely hope it leads to people being more creative since TikTok can be relatively easy to go “viral” on. I would hope it just allows for more unknown artists to get their stuff out there fast and also allow for a more diverse set of popular musicians.
THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: Who are some of your favorite new or underground music artists on TikTok?
ADDISON GRACE: I recently discovered @cowgirlb3b0p, also known as ash tuesday, who deserves way more recognition! Her voice, melodies, and songwriting are all incredible. Olive Klug, @oliveklug, is also amazing- I really adore their voice and all the little inflections they put on key lyrics/words. Kevin Atwater, @kevinatwatermusic, is another who’s been picking up speed recently who I just love so much.
THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: What three words would you use to define your artistic self?
ADDISON GRACE: Passionate, peculiar, and self-recognizing.
THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: What has been the most rewarding thing about being a songwriter and having a platform?
ADDISON GRACE: Being able to give people the songs that I needed growing up or still need even now. I’m just so grateful I’ve gotten to a point where I can put words to such intimate, specific feelings. I’m glad others relate to it, it makes me feel less alone and also like my experiences weren’t truly isolating. I like to think that I’m who I needed as a kid and I’m glad I can be that person now for both adults and kids.
THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: Since Halloween is coming up, what do you have a favorite Halloween film or score?
ADDISON GRACE: I’ve always been a huge fan of Coraline for some reason! I was lucky that it never scared me as a kid, haha!
THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: And lastly, what is up next for you Addison Grace?
ADDISON GRACE: I’m going on tour with Ricky Montgomery who’s a good friend of mine! I’m also releasing my second EP on November 11th called “Things That Are Bad for Me” (OUT NOW). Hopefully soon I’ll be making my first album or headlining again!

North London Indie-Pop artist Natalie Shay and Brit school alum latest release is an titled “MILK”. It’s full of earnest and bright melodic pop numbers that explored different feelings and experiences that occurred during the lockdown. I chatted with Natalie about her new music, the ups and downs in her life in the past couple of years, her influences, and even Taylor Swift.
THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: Hi, Natalie, First off... How have you been? What has 2022 been like for you? Especially in comparison to last year?
NATALIE SHAY: Hey! thanks so much for having me, ive been well thanks for asking, 2022 has been a really great year for me and my music, a big step up from last year for sure! Aside from music it's been a rocky year, lots of ups and downs, but generally good :)
THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: Can speak a bit on your musical background? Has music always played role in your life?
NATALIE SHAY: Yes, music has always been a big part of my life, I began playing classical guitar aged 5, and I started training in musical theatre around the same time. However the whole 'singer/songwriter' dream did not arise until I was about 10 years old, when i first discovered Taylor Swift's fearless album, I thought it was incredible, and that inspired what I do now!
THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: Since your sound is a has a lot of 80s pop influences particular the new EP... What’s your go to 80s jam?
NATALIE SHAY: My fave 80s jam is ``Heaven is a Place on earth" or'' Boys of Summer''. I listen to both on repeat, always.
THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: When you’re in album making mode do you ever have visuals in mind as you write songs?
NATALIE SHAY: I don't often have the visuals until the song is written, when listening back to things and imagining where they could go, that's when the production style/visuals etc begin to form. When I'm writing, it's totally just about me getting my thoughts and emotions into a lyric.
THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: What's the music scene like in North London and how does it influence you artistically if at all?
NATALIE SHAY: I've been involved in the gernal London music scene for a long time, I began playing gigs and shows aged 13, and I've been doing things like this ever since. The London music scene is one of the greatest in the world I'm sure, it's such a mixed hub of cultures and different kinds of people and creatives. this has definitely influenced me, just the sheer amount of different collaborators and people ive met or performed wirth have inspired me so so much
THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: Your second EP "MILK" is out. Can you talk a little bit about how the recording and writing process was for it?
NATALIE SHAY: This ep was written and recorded with so many different people, pretty much every track has its own unique combination of collaborators and talent involved. and all of the people i worked with, were all over the country. We wrote practically every track in 2020, in and around the lockdowns. This ep really does represent a whole year of my life in every way.
THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: We’re any songs of the 'MILK' EP that we’re more challenging to write? Some that came together quickly?
NATALIE SHAY: The easiest one to write was 'new wave' . It's the feel good happy pop track on the ep, the lyrics are sweet, simple and to the point. harder ones to write were heaven and two sparks, 'two sparks' is such a personal song to me, the lyrics needed my full attention and time, and same for 'heaven', i had so much i wanted to say, just needed to figure out how to say it.
THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: What would you say that your latest release "MILK" biggest inspirations and influences are? Can you delve into that more?
NATALIE SHAY: lyrically, everything is autobiographical. Musically, a real mix, taylors 1989 is always my go to ref for sound and production, same with haim days are gone. Every track on the ep is about something I experienced, discovered or felt over a year of my life, all different topics too.
THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: How do you think studying at The Brit School has helped you in as you began to shape and mold your career?
NATALIE SHAY: without brit i probably wouldn't be doing what i do now, it gave me the tools and understanding to be able to take the dive into making music my full time career, i met lots of the people i still work with regularly now when i was there, it's also just generally very inspiring to be somewhere like that. and be surrounded with like minded driven people.
THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: Are there any current artists that have been “On Repeat” for you as a band lately? What music have you been playlisting?
NATALIE SHAY: Taylor swift all the time, all the way. my fave band is little comets, i also love some of my friends music, artists such as, kayla grace, lucy deakin and beth mccarthy
THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: What has been one of the most rewarding experiences for you this year?
NATALIE SHAY: The most rewarding thing this year was just the whole summer, some great festival experiences and opportunities, i enjoyed this summer very very much.
THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: What fictional character do you think would most identify with your sound or aesthetic?
NATALIE SHAY: mitchie in camp rock
THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: What three words would you use to define your artistic self?
NATALIE SHAY: sophisticated honest pop
THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: What was it like stepping into the EDM world and working with those artists? You worked with Grum and Kryder right?
NATALIE SHAY: yes! doing the EDM stuff has been super fun, ive loved seeing the tracks go global, and also attending the shows, the fans know all the words, and i'm stood in the crowd with them, but they dont know its me or my vocal, very cool experiences.
THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: To close, What’s one thing that people are generally surprised to find out about you?
NATALIE SHAY: I think people are always surprised at the actual depth of my obsession with musicals. I'm a massive theatre kid, love it!

When I asked her what is one thing people are generally surprised to find out about you, Seeing how social media can be a veneer for many things, including people. Lindemann's response was quite like what many of us would say, that she is more than what she is perceived to be online. Sometimes all the versatility we have as humans get lost in the social media clutter. So for fans of Maggie's, her latest album, SUCKERPUNCH, is truly only the tip of the iceberg.

Those nods to past give the track a certain air of nostalgia all while firmly planted in the roots of todays Alternative Rock sound. Plus frontman Alex Turner vocals have never sounded this strong.

JONAH YANO - "leslianne"
If there was ever a song that could be called short and sweet (it’s under 2 minutes). This is the perfect song. The track which is the second helping from Yano’s forthcoming sophomore album ‘Portrait of a Dog’ finds the artist gracefully musing over a girl finding her way home. Along the way Yano fuses his voice with his piano work and it’s exquisite.

From the gang vocals in the chorus, fast riffs, loud guitars, hard hitting drums, and huge hooks. These girls are ready for the limelight and representation in pop-punk is sorely needed.
PRECIOUS PEPALA - “LOOKING FOR TROUBLE”
Rising English act Precious Pepala is already making waves with her impressive voice and storytelling. At only 17 her latest single “Looking For Trouble” tackles a tale as old as time, but with a refreshing honesty, Millennial/Gen Z relatability, and a soulful pop vocal delivery beyond her years. Precious is certainly one to watch.
Madison Cunningham - “Revealer”
Revealer is the new album by artist, singer, and songwriter Madison Cunningham. While her sound may feel familiar with its heavy notes of nostalgia plucked throughout. Her vocals, lyrical delivery and choice in words and wordplay is all fresh, she’s throws in her many influences from Jazz, Pop, and even Alternative Rock. Her Folk-Americana sound is uniquely her as she often touches upon the anxieties of her generation, the hopes, the fears, the highs and lows. Which is what I asked her about when I got the chance during a small presser last month. What has been the most rewarding experience for her so far? Despite Grammy noms, doing a NPR Tiny Desk Concert, and performing on late night shows. Cunningham said opening up for Harry Styles was it. She was in awe of how gracious his fans were even taking the time to learn her songs. Although, I have a feeling some were already fans.

Duncan Lawrence - “Electric Life”
While the “Arcade” singer new single subject matter is quite heavy. It’s song about loved ones who have passed on and the transformation of deep sorrow to hope about it. Duncan masks the sorrowful nature of the song in dynamic, warm, 70s inspired sonics. The artist creating what is ultimately a bombastic tune.

Buzzy electro-pop band VALLEY have an infectious and optimistic pop anthem out titled “The Problem Song”. Non-binary Bedroom Pop artist Khai Dreams returns with a new track and animated music video for their vibe heavy track “Bugs”. Queer singer-songwriter Darren Hayes (who you might recognize from the 90s band Savage Garden) makes statement in the power of vulnerability laying reclamation to the word “Homosexual” by naming his new album that title. Vancouver artist EKKSTACY drops his new album “Misery”, an album that explores Alternative music and dark side of it and life. You can also watch the music video for his latest single “I’m So Happy” here. For fans of the pop vocal or the group Pentatonix you can check out Scott Hoying’s debut track “Mars” here.
Lastly, there’s new music out from pop artists like North London’s Natalie Shay, Salt Lake City’s Addison Grace, and Canada’s Rêve. The last three all have a penchant for great storytelling that under pin either catchy beats, great pop hooks or euphoric melodies.
FITZ AND THE TANTRUMS + ANDY GRAMMER BRING THE WRONG PARTY TOUR TO L.A. WITH HELP FROM BRELAND
Last Saturday, Three of what seems like the unlikeliest artists brought what was an epic dance party to The Greek Theatre. Opener Breland with Hip-Hop Country, Andy Grammer with his happy Pop, and Fitz And The Tantrums, whose soulful pop tunes have ears tuned, feet dancing since their KCRW days have endearingly collided on their The Wrong Party tour.

Last Saturday, Three of what seems like the unlikeliest artists brought what was an epic dance party to The Greek Theatre. Opener Breland with Hip-Hop Country, Andy Grammer with his happy Pop, and Fitz And The Tantrums, whose soulful pop tunes have ears tuned, feet dancing since their KCRW days have endearingly collided on their The Wrong Party tour. While it may, on the surface, come across like a mish-mash of Adult Alternative radio artists with popular hits. It ultimately worked for many reasons, as it was a family show. Families were out and about on this breezy Saturday evening. Also, all three acts together brought showmanship. Lastly, two performers on the lineup (Breland and Andy Grammer) have roots in the country music space.

Breland was first up on the lineup. His sound has its roots in country music but was so much more. "Praise The Lord" was gospel tinged with a hipper country sound. Then songs like "Thick" and "Throw It Back" completely leaned into the Country-Rap sound. So it was no surprise that his Nelly mashup was straight fire. The New Jersey native and Gen Z artist fused Hip-Hop, Gospel, Soul, and Pop into what I could only describe as a Breland fusion. A mix of funky, bouncy, feel-good music. That easily captured the audience. An audience that was only starting to trickle in. Make no mistake, though, Breland fans were there and ready to party. His opening set was full of exuberant boundless energy and the perfect joyful vibe to start the night out. His banter between his songs was my favorite as he regaled the audience with jokes and other anecdotes from his life. Including the time Keith Urban asked him out to Nashville to write music, and he hopped on a plane and arrived the following morning.

Andy Grammer was next out, opening with a spoken word poem befitting his brand of joyful uplifting pop. That poem transitioned into the song "Damn It Feels Good to Be Me". A booming pop-jazz style band backed Grammer and was complete with backup singers who also played jazz instruments like the saxophone. For some, Grammer may not be a face that is easily recognizable but with his penchant for writing memorable pop hooks and catchy melodies. There is no doubt that you have heard a song or two from him. Infectious melodies, jazzy riffs, and dance-pop synths permeated the well-paced sixteen-song set. Some highlights include the new collab, “The Wrong Party”, with Michael ‘Fitz’ Fitzpatrick of Fitz And The Tantrums, who popped out to sing it with him. Then the monogamy and relationship anthem, Honey, I’m Good. Or the soulful foot stomper, Good To Be Alive. His vocals shined throughout and soared best on the more personal numbers like “Fresh Eyes”, Joy, or later on, during the encore “Saved My Life”. The jazz-inflected “Pennies From Heaven / Stay / Fine by Me” mashup was a sweet surprise. His debut track, “Keep Your Head Up”, was another brilliant moment during his encore. Those lyrics still resonate and speak to the dreamer in all of us.

Lastly, Fitz And The Tantrums closed out the night and the L.A. stop of The Wrong Party tour. Although far removed from their KRCW days where blue-eyed soul and a vintage sound dominated their music. Their evolution to Alterna-Pop heavy hitters makes this band so great, reminding us that a dream and hard work will ultimately pay off. The band fronted by two singers, the aforementioned Michael 'Fitz' Fitzpatrick and Noelle Scaggs plus their insane chemistry. The Greek Theatre showcased their exuberant blend of soulful dance pop and was the perfect way to cap off what was an eclectic dance party in the canyons of L.A. The band opened with “OCD” into a “Don’t Gotta Work It Out”, a Fitz classic and staple. Songs like “Complicated” got the party moving with its R&B bounce before moving into synth-laden “Out Of My League”. Other highlights from the band include their new cut “Sway”, the soul-inflected “MoneyGrabber”, and the skittering pop of “123456”. Fitz and The Tantrums continued the trend of incredible musicianship and professionalism that night. They closed out their eighteen-song set with an encore that included hits, “HandClap” and “The Walker”. “The Wrong Party” tour offered fans and music lovers a night of fun, dancing, and lighthearted escapism in its purest form. It was a bubbly hip-pop disco party accentuated by an incredible light show. Fun for all too, as you’re never late to this party.

THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: Hi, Liz! How has your year been so far? Thanks for taking the time to speak with me at TRB.
LIZ CASS: Thanks for having me :)
THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: How did you each get your start in the music industry? Was it something that you felt a calling to?
LIZ CASS: I started singing when I was really young as I was a choral scholar. But I really got into other genres of music as a teenager and had a real urge to move to the big city and try and make it as a singer. I didn’t really care about anything else and ended up ditching my A-levels and hot-footing it to London. I was introduced to some amazing people and started writing songs with Fraser T Smith and met one of the heads of Warner Music who came to see me sing at a big concert in Leicester Square. But ultimately I wasn’t really ready for it all and had no idea what kind of artist I was. So I guess I blew it back then!
THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: Going back to your childhood a bit, did you grow up in a musical family? Was there a band or artist that in particular felt like home for you?
LIZ CASS: My parents weren’t musicians but Dad had a great vinyl collection and got me really interested in all the great artists and bands from the 60s, 70s, and 80s. Artists like Kate Bush, Sade, and Fleetwood Mac definitely have an influence on me and my music. The 80s is my decade. I love great baselines and synths are my heaven.
THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: Moving ahead… Can we talk about what your typical creative and writing process is like and how has that evolved for you as you’ve developed as an artist?
LIZ CASS: I wrote this album with Ed Graves who has an amazing studio in Bath called Rainbow Wood. Before we started working together I still didn’t have much confidence as a songwriter as I’d taken a long time out of the industry and I was really just experimenting with him and had no expectations of where it was going. But we just clicked and the music flowed. Being in that beautiful studio, the outside world melted away and as he started playing chords on the synths or strumming on the guitar the melodies and lyrics just started flowing out of me so quickly and easily. We’re so in sync. By the time he’s got a structure together for the song, I generally have all the lyrics and melody ready and we lay it all down. I’ve never had such an easy writing process with anyone before.
I’ve really figured out who I am as an artist through 3 years of writing sessions with Ed. I have stories to tell and I know how I want to deliver them. Now when I go to the studio I have the confidence I never had when I was younger and I know how to translate my thoughts and ideas into songs that represent me and the kind of music I love. It’s been a long road to get here but now I feel happy to keep experimenting and evolving. Got there in the end!
THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: Let’s discuss your latest single “Near Miss”, how did that song come together? What’s the backstory on it and how was the creative process?
LIZ CASS: It was inspired by a romantic situation I was struggling with. Being caught up in that no man’s land where someone is hot and cold and not ready to commit, so you don’t know where you stand. I was feeling quite low and confused and writing is like therapy for me, so I headed down to Rainbow Wood. I think we wrote that in about 6 hours from start to finish! I was feeling quite punchy through my frustration and wanted killer beats and baseline to get it all off my chest. It was definitely the start of a new direction for my music after a lot of wallowing during Covid. I just want to make more upbeat fun pop music for a while now.
THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: If you were to describe your sound to someone who hasn’t heard it in only three words. What words would you choose?
LIZ CASS: Emotive synth pop!
THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: Lastly, what is up next for you on the horizon, Liz?
LIZ CASS: My album is coming out on 21st October which is exciting. It’ll be strange to send it out into the world after three years of writing it but I’m so ready. I’ve got a live show in London on 10th September at Laylow and I’m planning more gigs this autumn around the album release. I have a covers EP ready to be mixed of some of my all time favourite songs which I hope to release early next year. And then I guess I need to crack on and finish the next album! Stay tuned :)
