Art Pop Singer Ebony Buckle Talks New Single ‘Ghost’

Australian born and London based Singer-Songwriter Ebony Buckle new single ‘Ghost’ was born out of heart-wrenching times. After becoming separated from her writing partner and new husband Nick due to a struggle to renew her visa. The duo put their struggles in learning how be apart in the track. ‘Ghost’ was written via Skype and I interviewed Ebony about the song and her artistry below.

THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: I’d like to begin by talking about your new single ‘Ghost’. How was it writing such an emotionally difficult song and over Skype no less?

EBONY BUCKLE: It was a really important song to write. I hadn't been able to express my emotions, I had kinda shut down as a way of coping with being in limbo. And this was the first thing I did where I let something out. Skype had become pretty normal by then!

THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: The music video for “Ghost” is out this Friday. How did you go about setting the scene and creating the music video for “Ghost”?

EBONY BUCKLE: I filmed Ghost with my brother Finn. We wanted to recreate the feeling I used to have of waking up in the morning, remembering where you are, going about the day in a daze and dreaming of a day when it all changes. It was a really emotional day and I think it helped Nick and I let go of a lot of anger and emotion we had been holding on to.

THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: Is there a lyric you’ve written that you feel most emotionally connected to in life at the present moment?

EBONY BUCKLE: My last single 'Susan' was written for my imaginary best friend Susan the Raptor. One of the lines is "Who am I?" That's a pretty common question I ask myself.

THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: What’s a typical creative and recording process like for you?

EBONY BUCKLE: When writing a song, I generally write a lot of poems as a way to process my thoughts. I will bring a song/poem to Nick and we will finish it together. We are really lucky to have a studio at home and so we are able to record as much as we want. Although we do have to schedule recording days otherwise life gets in the way.

THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: What's it like performing in live theatre productions in The West End? Are there any skills that you take with you as a singer-songwriter? Or vice-versa?

EBONY BUCKLE: It is an amazing feeling. The kinda feeling where you think to yourself "I want to get everything I can out of this because it might never happen again". The last play I did was with a really special cast and team and it will stay with me forever. I think something I am trying to work on in both areas is having confidence in and trusting my own instincts.

THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: What has been one of your favourite things about being a songwriter?

EBONY BUCKLE: Writing and performing my own music has helped me express myself and be as truthful as I can. I love being able to share it with people.

THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: Who are some of your favourite singers and songwriters? It could be from the past or present.

EBONY BUCKLE: Regina Spektor, Imogen Heap, Kate Miller-Heidke, Joni Mitchell, Lou Reed, David Bowie, Tori Amos, Kate Bush, Aurora, Laura Marling, Sia I could go on forever!

THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: If you could collaborate with any musician? Who would you choose and why?

EBONY BUCKLE: I would LOVE to work with Imogen Heap. Just to see how her mind works. I love the way her music is so epic and her lyrics are so down to earth.

THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: What’s your favourite ’80s jam?

EBONY BUCKLE: I LOVE 'Hymn to Her' by Meg Keane and performed by The Pretenders (also my Mum's favourite song. shout out to my Mum ;)).

THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: Are there any artists that have been “On Repeat” for you lately? What music have you been listening to?

EBONY BUCKLE: I recently discovered 'The Whole of The Moon' by The Waterboys. Oh and 'Work of Art' by Burning Hearts is also amazing. I actually made a Spotify playlist of songs people are listening to at the moment. I have been asking everyone to send me their song of the time! Feel free to send me more!

THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: If you had the chance to write a song based on your favorite book. What book would that be and why?

EBONY BUCKLE: I think it would be The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams. It's hilarious and set in space which is a winning combination for me. I might actually do that thank you for the idea!

THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: And what’s next on the horizon for you, Ebony?

EBONY BUCKLE: I am recording my first album. If you want to be part of the journey check out where I am sharing the songs as they are recorded, new music, poems, general thoughts and gardening tips (that one is a joke).

THE RECLUSIVE BLOGGER: Is there anything else you would like to add? Thank you for your time! :)

EBONY BUCKLE: Thank you for YOUR time and I guess in closing I just want to send my love to everyone. There is so much going on but I think change is seriously needed in the way our societies are built. I fully support the Black Lives Matter movement and have been trying to read and learn and listen as much as I can.
